If you leave the wax paper on one side, the tape may not adhere properly to the grip. To install a grip, you need at least 1 wrap of grip tape to match the stated size of the grip. This means there is one layer of tape that goes around and does not overlap the grip, regardless of the size of the grip. What happens if you apply more than 1 wrap, you ask? Good question.. Using one layer of tape around the shaft already increases your diameter by 0.
Based on this calculation, here are the number of wraps to use when you want to increase the size of your grip, starting with a bare grip:. Anyone know? I was thinking of ordering some midsize Pure Pros, but a course here has the color I want in regular. I'm trying to figure out if there are any downsides to just building those up, vs ordering midsize grips. Thanks for any help. GolferMahn New member. TC Keg Thrower. A standard grip with 3 wraps of tape is as close to midsize as you get.
The only real difference is that the midsize grip is built up by literally being constructed of more rubber or whatever the substrate is compared to a grip that is built up with tape.
As for why someone would even consider adding more tape versus going to an oversized grip, feel comes into play.
On the flip side, adding more tape to the grip is going to stretch the walls of the rubber, giving it a firmer feel. You also need to be cognizant of what additional wraps of tape versus a larger grip will do to the overall swing weight of your clubs.
