After the advent of the railways, it became principally a fishing port. A stream runs through the village, finding its way into the sea over the harbour wall. Visitors are advised to use the large car park at the top of the hill and to walk down to the village, as the narrow streets can be difficult to negotiate.

There is a stunning view of the coast from this car park, in addition to easy access to both Port Isaac and Port Gaverne. On the subject of narrow streets, Port Isaac is renown for having one of the narrowest thoroughfares in Britain, the aptly named Squeezy Belly Alley!

Running throughout the many episodes of this very successful series is the on off romance between the local Port Wenn primary school teacher Louisa played by Caroline Catz and Doc Martin. If you watch Doc Martin Cornwall you will see the Doc going about his daily business on the streets of Portwenn and nearby towns and villages.

View images of Portwenn Cornwall. If you visit Port Issac and take a stroll around the village you will recognise lots of spots from Portwenn where they filmed Doc Martin on outside.

The building is not a school for Port Isaac anymore but you can recognise the outside of the building and the playground in which many scenes have been set.
